Against All Odds: Oscar Goodman and the 40th Anniversary of the Jimmy Chagra Murder Trial

Location: Inside the historic courtroom. A livestream of the presentation will be available on the Museum’s website. To RSVP to attend in-person or for the livestream link, click here.
Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum admission.
Description: Drug kingpin Jimmy Chagra, accused of paying a hitman $250,000 to kill U.S. District Judge John Wood, retained Las Vegas attorney Oscar Goodman to defend him. Goodman punched holes in the government’s case and the jury acquitted Chagra. It was a shocking verdict after the FBI conducted its most extensive investigation since the Kennedy assassination. On the trial’s 40th anniversary, Goodman and Chagra’s eldest daughter Catherine will look back at the case and what it meant for Goodman and the Chagra family. A book signing of Catherine Chagra’s “Dirty Darlings” will follow this program.

Additionally, Museum Members and Donors can enjoy an exclusive meet-and-greet with Oscar Goodman and Catherine Chagra at 6 p.m. prior to the program. For more information on membership click here.

Speakers:

  • Passionate about downtown revitalization, former City of Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman is the primary visionary of The Mob Museum. As former chairman of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Goodman worked feverishly to promote Las Vegas as one of the most exciting destinations in the world. Goodman is one of the nation’s best criminal defense attorneys and was named one of the “15 Best Trial Lawyers in America” by the National Law Journal. He spent more than 35 years defending some of the most notorious alleged Mob figures, including Meyer Lansky, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, Tony Spilotro and Jimmy Chagra.
  • Catherine Chagra and her two sisters Cindy and Christa were the daughters of Jimmy Chagra, a professional Las Vegas gambler and drug trafficking kingpin once named the “Pablo Escobar of weed.” After their father was arrested and his $100 million disappeared, the daughters were left penniless at the mercy of a Texas society that vilified them. With the help of their principled mother before her tragic death, and haunted by the shadow of their father, Catherine Chagra’s book “Dirty Darlings” provides a portrait of courage as three women attempt to re-assemble the shattered pieces of their lives.

ABOUT THE UNDERGROUND
The Underground is an immersive Prohibition history exhibition featuring a speakeasy, distillery and private VIP room in the basement of The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. Artifacts from the 1920s and 1930s tell the intriguing story of the Prohibition era, which not only saw a proliferation of bootlegged booze and the meteoric growth of organized crime outfits but also had a profound, lasting impact on society, specifically making way for modern cocktail culture. A seasonal cocktail menu gives guests the opportunity to try contemporary takes on classic Prohibition-era cocktails. The menu and atmosphere have landed the speakeasy on several “best cocktail bars in Las Vegas” lists. Distillery tours allow participants to learn about Prohibition and its impact on a variety of spirits and drinking habits while tasting a few of the Museum’s moonshines. The distilling program has received various accolades, including Best Moonshine at the 2020 International Whiskey Competition. Complimentary entrance to The Underground is granted at the secret side door to visitors who know the password, which is published daily on Instagram Stories @MobMuseum_Underground.
