The defending Mountain West regular-season champion UNLV Volleyball team, which is coming off a 26-win campaign in 2022 and another NCAA Tournament appearance, announced its complete 2023 schedule on Monday.
The Rebels, who will be led by new head coach Malia Shoji, will play a total of 30 regular-season matches over a four-month span that begins at the end of August and stretches into late November.
UNLV will participate in three non-conference tournaments – two of which will be away from its home arena of the Cox Pavilion – and will have three stand-alone matches before MW action begins in September. This season’s MW Championship will be hosted on UNLV’s campus in the Cox Pavilion, Nov. 22-24.
UNLV will get its season started Saturday, Aug. 12 with its intrasquad Scarlet & Gray scrimmage on Saturday. Aug. 12 in the Cox Pavilion’s practice gym and host an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 19 against Northern Arizona (also in the Cox practice gym) before opening the regular season at Colorado’s tournament, Friday-Sunday, Aug. 25-27 in Boulder, Colorado. In addition to facing the Buffaloes on Aug. 25, UNLV will also play North Texas (Aug. 26) and Campbell (Aug. 27) at the event. Colorado was also a NCAA Tournament participant last season.
The Rebels will then head to Utah for two single matches – at Utah in Salt Lake City on Friday, Sept. 1 and at Weber State in Ogden on Saturday, Sept. 2. The match against the Utes will be a homecoming of sorts for Coach Shoji as she spent the past eight years on Utah’s staff as an assistant coach, then associate head coach.
After the two-match trip to Utah, UNLV will remain on the road for a third straight week to participate in Washington’s tournament in Seattle. UNLV will play Memphis on Thursday, Sept. 7, Florida International on Friday, Sept. 8 and then the host Huskies later on the same day. Washington was also a 2023 NCAA Tournament participant.
UNLV will then return home to Cox Pavilion to host its first regular-season match of 2023 against Southern Utah on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Rebels will then conclude the non-conference slate by hosting its own tournament from Thursday, Sept. 14 – Saturday, Sept. 16, which includes Coppin State, Portland and Lamar.
The Rebels will open MW action with two home matches on Tuesday, Sept. 19 and Thursday, Sept. 21 against San Diego State and San Jose State, respectively. Their first MW road matches are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 30 at Wyoming and Colorado State. The regular season will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 18 at San Diego State.
