UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYS NORTHERN ARIZONA TO 0-0 DOUBLE-OVERTIME TIE

Rebels have posted back-to-back shutouts on the road

Despite an overall 17-8 advantage on total shots, UNLV had to settle for a tie on Sunday night, as the Rebels and Northern Arizona finished double-overtime knotted at 0-0 in women’s college soccer action at Lumberjack Stadium. The Rebels moved their record to 4-1-1 with the draw, while NAU remained undefeated at 3-0-2.

“It was a tough tie against NAU, who is off to a great start this season,” said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. “We moved the ball well and had the majority of the play though regulation and both overtimes. The Lumberjacks defended hard throughout though, and always seemed to got a foot to the ball every time we neared the goal.”

After allowing the Lumberjacks to get off four shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Rebel defenders stiffened for the remainder of the night, allowing only four more the final 65 minutes. Four of the shots were on goal, and UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell stopped all four to come up with her second straight shutout, and third of the season. UNLV meanwhile finished with six shots on goal, with Lauren Weaver posting six saves for NAU.

“Overall we aren’t satisfied with the result, but two shutouts in a row on the road is something positive to build on,” said Coll. “We have to be more decisive in the final third so we can translate our dominating possessions into scoring chances.”

Freshman Miranda Rawlings had a team-high four shots for UNLV, including two on goal, while classmate Jordan Magnin finished with three. Savannah Berry took half of NAU’s total with four on the night.

UNLV will continue its road swing with its next action, a Friday, Sept. 13 contest at Washington State in Pullman. That game will start at 2:30 pm, and will be shown live by the Pac-12 Network Washington channel.
