UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT ROAD WIN, 3-2 AT NEW MEXICO STATE

All three scores came in the first half


 UNLV scored three times in a 17-minute burst midway through the first half to claim its second straight road win, 3-2 at New Mexico State in women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Athletic Complex on the NMSU campus. The victory improved UNLV to 5-2-1 overall, while the Aggies dropped to 1-9 for the year.
 
“It’s always great to pick up wins on the road,” said UNLV head coach Chris Shaw. “To pick up two wins in one weekend feels great and we hope that generates some momentum heading into conference play.”
 
Though the Rebels had a commanding lead on shots, 23-9, including 20-6 on shots on goal, it was the host Aggie squad that posted the first goal of the day. That score came from Holly Abdelkader on a shot from 20 yards out on the right side, off an assist by Jennae Cambra.
 
The Rebels would tie the game in the 23rd minute when Dakota Blazak sent a high arching shot from the right side of the box into the net. Denali Murnan was credited with an assist on the goa l. UNLV went ahead by a 2-1 score in the 28th minute when Murnan notched her second goal of the year, off a Hayley Wilson free kick.
 
The eventual game-winner came in the 40th minute on freshman Kaila Brinkman’s first career goal. Isabelle Delgado started the play with a cross to Brinkman, who blasted a shot that hit the top of the crossbar before deflecting into the goal. That put UNLV ahead by a 3-1 count.
Brinkman’s score was also the only goal for the next 49 minutes of the contest. The teams combining for 14 shots in the second half (10 for UNLV, four for NMSU), but neither connecting until the final shot of the afternoon. That goal was provided by the Aggies following a foul on the Rebels that led to a free kick just outside the box. Cambra took the kick for NMSU, and sent a shot to the back of the goal to make it a 3-2 game in the 89th minute. UNLV would not allow another shot over the final 113 seconds to close out the road victory.
Jordan Sallee (48 minutes) and Jessie Clark (42 minutes) split time in goal for the Rebels, with Sallee collecting three saves and Clark one. Both UNLV goalies gave up one goal each. For NMSU, Taylor Rice played the first half and had seven saves and three goals allowed. Tayler Hammack was in the net for the final 45 minutes, coming up with 10 saves while not allowed a score. UNLV had all six corner kicks in the game.
UNLV returns to action with the start of Mountain West conference play on Friday, Sept. 26, with a road contest at Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., starting at 4 pm (PT).
