UNLV’S ALANA CESARZ EARNS MOUNTAIN WEST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HONORS
Junior forward earns honorable mention status
UNLV’s Alana Cesarz received All-Mountain West Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention honors as the league announced their season awards on Sunday afternoon.
Cesarz, a 6-1 junior forward from Delavan, Wis., earns her first league honors after finishing the regular season with a team-high 14.3 points per game average, which led the Lady Rebels. In Mountain West games, she finished seventh in the league in scoring with 14.7 points per game, and also ranked among the conference leaders in three-point field goal percentage (7th – 38.8%) and free throw percentage (11th-77.8%).
She scored in double-figures in 14 of 18 conference games, including a career-high 28 in a home win over San Jose State on Jan. 29. That was one of two 20+ point performances by Cesarz during the league season, and finished the year posting double-figures in nine straight games.
Senior Jennifer Schlott of Utah State was named MW Player of the Year, while Taylor Thompson from Fresno State and Mimi Mungedi from Nevada, Reno were Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Another award was shared, with Yaiza Rodriguez (Boise State) and Ellen Nystrom (Colorado State) both selected as Co-Freshman of the Year. The other player awards went to Deanna Weaver of Boise State (Newcomer of the Year), Caitlin Duffy of Colorado State (Sixth Player of the Year), and Ryun Williams (Coach of the Year).
The All-MW First Team was made up of Weaver, Thompson, Schlott, Kayla Woodward from Wyoming and Cierra Warren from San Diego State. Four Colorado State players were selected to the second team Sam Martin, AJ Newton, Ellen Nystrom and Gritt Ryder. They were joined by Bree Farley from Fresno State and Danika Sharp from Nevada, Reno.
The Lady Rebels finished the regular season at 12-18 and tied for sixth with a 8-8 record in league play. UNLV, the seventh seed in the 2014 Reese’s MW Championships, opens against 10-seeded San Jose State in the first round on Monday at 4:30 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
