UNLV’S KYLE MELLIES NAMED WAC MEN’S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior earns second career weekly honor from the WAC
UNLV’s Kyle Mellies has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. This is the second straight week a Rebel has received a weekly honor from the conference, as Salvador Bernal was the Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 1, while this is the second weekly honor of Mellies’ career.
Mellies, a senior defender and native of Las Vegas, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Johann Memorial Classic after leading the Rebels to two shutout victories over the weekend. He anchored a UNLV backline that held IPFW and Howard to a total of three shots over 180 minutes, and only one total shot on goal. The Rebels won both games by 4-0 scores to improve to 4-0 for the year, the best start to a season since 1985.
This season Mellies has started all four contests, and has helped the Rebels allow only four goals this season, giving the team a 0.99 GAA which ranks third in the WAC.
The Rebels return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, when it hosts top-20 UMBC at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
