UNLV MEN’S SOCCER’S KYLE MELLIES NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Las Vegas native helped Rebels to a 2-0 weekend

UNLV’s Kyle Mellies earned his first career weekly honor on Monday, as he was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday. He is the second Rebel to be honored this season, after Rodrigo Fuentes was named the Offensive POTW on Sept. 9.

Mellies, a redshirt junior defender and native of Las Vegas, was a big key to the Rebels’ two victories this past weekend, as UNLV did not allow a goal while he was on the field. In a 2-0 win over East division leader Kansas City on Oct. 25, he helped the Rebels post their third shutout of the season. Mellies also also came up with the game-winner when he knocked in a free kick from Bradley Kamdem into the goal in the 70th minute for the first score of the game.

He also was on the field for the first 25 minutes of UNLV’s win over Houston Baptist on Oct. 27, helping them out to a 2-0 edge before having to leave the contest with a head injury. Both of the goals scored against UNLV in the 5-2 victory came while Mellies was on the bench.

This season Mellies has played in all 15 games with 14 starts on the defensive backline, and his two goals this year has him tied for fifth on the team with four points.

UNLV (6-9. 4-3 WAC) returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when it takes on Air Force on the road in Colorado Springs, Colo., at 4 pm (PT).
