UNLV’S KHAMVONGSA NAMED WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rebel senior helped post third shutout of season
Senior Jason Khamvongsa was named the WAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping UNLV to a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga in the last non-conference game of the season on Sunday. He becomes the second Rebel this season to be named Defensive Player of the Week, and its the second weekly honor in his career.
A native of Honolulu, Hawai’i, Khamvongsa was key in the play of the Rebel backline that posted the team’s third shutout of the season. While Gonzaga finished with 13 shutouts, the Rebels limited the Bulldogs to mostly long-distance attempts, and to a season-low two shots on goal.
The Rebels, 6-2 on the year and riding a six-game win streak, which is tied for third in the nation, returns to action on Friday night. UNLV will host Houston Baptist in the WAC opener for both teams at 7 pm at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
