UNLV’S JASON KHAMVONGSA NAMED WAC MEN’S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rebel junior had an assist and a goal in UNLV’s 2-1 victory at Grand Canyon on Sunday

UNLV’s Jason Khamvongsa has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. This is the first weekly honor of Khamvongsa’s career, and he is the fourth Rebel to earn weekly honors this season from the WAC, joining Salvador Bernal (Offensive – Sept. 1), Kyle Mellies (Defensive – Sept. 8) and Ryan Harding (Defensive – Oct. 6).

A junior defender from Honolulu, Hawaii, Khamvongsa played a key role in the Rebels’ 2-1 win at Grand Canyon on Sunday that gave UNLV the WAC regular season title. He not only helped the UNLV backline hold GCU scoreless until a late goal in the final 40 seconds, he also had a hand in both Rebel scores. First he assisted on Kyle Mellies’ goal in the 43rd minute that put UNLV ahead 1-0. Then in the 61st minute, Khamvongsa blasted a free kick into the back of the goal, giving him his third score of the year and the eventual game-winner.
The Rebels, 13-4-2 on the year, are the top seed in this year’s WAC Tournament, and will play either San Jose State or UMKC in the semifinals on Friday at 4:30 pm in Seattle, Wash.
