UNLV MEN’S GOLF TO WRAP UP REGULAR SEASON IN TEXAS THIS WEEKEND
Morris Williams Invitational will be held in Austin on Saturday and Sunday
The UNLV men’s golf team will travel to Austin, Texas, for the 47th annual Morris Williams Invitational, which will be played at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,412 yards) on Saturday-Sunday, April 13-14.
The 12-team tournament will consist of 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m CT on Saturday and split-tee starts from 8:00 – 9:39 a.m. CT on Sunday.
Of the 12 schools participating, 11 are in the Top 50 of Golfstat’s rankings: Baylor (49), Houston (25), Kent State (20), Liberty (39), New Mexico (4), North Texas (36), Oklahoma State (18), TCU (12), host Texas (6), Texas Tech (44), UNLV (29) and UT-Arlington.
The Rebels’ lineup will consist of the same five players that captured last weekend’s ASU Thunderbird Invitational title – a one-shot victory over top-ranked California – and earned UNLV Golfweek’s National Team of the Week honor: senior Kevin Penner, freshman AJ McInerney, sophomores Kurt Kitayama and Carl Jonson, and junior Nicholas Maruri. Freshman Zane Thomas will be playing as an individual this weekend.
Texas (9-under 843) is the defending team champion at the Morris Williams Invitational, a tournament it won by 16 shots, while last year’s co-medalists were Texas’ Dylan Frittelli, Jordan Spieth and Julio Vegas (all at 5-under 208). This will be UNLV’s first time participating in the Morris Williams Invitational since 2009.
UNLV has recorded five top-four finishes in nine events this season. The Morris Williams Invitational will conclude UNLV’s regular season. The Mountain West Championship will be held May 3-5 in Tucson, Ariz.
