NO. 16 UNLV MEN’S GOLF BACK IN ACTION ON MONDAY-TUESDAY
Rebels in Alabama for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, Oct. 7-8
The UNLV men’s golf team, which moved up to No. 16 in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings on Friday, will be back in action this week on Monday, Oct. 7, and Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played at Old Overton Country Club (par 70, 7,204 yards) in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
The 12-team field includes host No. 1 Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, North Carolina-Charlotte, Texas, No. 2 Texas A&M, Texas-San Antonio, No. 12 UAB, No. 16 UNLV and No. 17 Vanderbilt. The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 36 holes (first and second rounds) on Monday and 18 holes (final round) on Tuesday. Mondays’ first round will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT, with round two scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT.
Competing for UNLV will be junior Kurt Kitayama, sophomore Zane Thomas, junior Carl Jonson, sophomore AJ McInerney and freshman Chris Tuulik.
Alabama has won the JPNI in five of the last seven years, including last season by four shots with a score of 17-over 857. The Crimson Tide’s Justin Thomas won medalist honors at the event last season by one shot at 2-under 208. UNLV finished fourth at last year’s JPNI at 28-over. McInerney was UNLV’s top finisher at the event among the players competing this year for the Rebels as he tied for 11th at 8-over 218. Jonson tied for 31st at 15-over, while Kitayama tied for 49th at 23-over.

This will be UNLV’s third tournament of the fall. The Rebels won the stroke- and match-play titles at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach in Calif., to open the season, and finished fourth at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., both in September.
