MOUNTAIN WEST TOURNAMENT – FIRST ROUND
UNLV to face San Diego State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center
The UNLV men’s basketball team will open Mountain West Tournament play on Wednesday, March 8 at 4 p.m. against San Diego State at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Runnin’ Rebels are the No. 11 seed, while the Aztecs are the No. 6 seed.
After defeating Utah State, 66-59, last Wednesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center on Senior Night, UNLV dropped its regular-season finale at Fresno State, 72-59, on Saturday.
Wednesday will mark UNLV’s third meeting with San Diego State this season. The Aztecs won both previous meetings: 64-51 in Las Vegas on Jan. 17 and 77-64 in San Diego on Feb. 19.
UNLV is led in scoring by junior guard Jovan Mooring (12.4 ppg), who is one of four Runnin’ Rebels averaging in double figures. Jones leads the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg), while Mooring also is tops in assists (4.0 apg, 2nd in MW).
San Diego State has lost three of its last four games, including Saturday at New Mexico, 64-59. Prior to that, the Aztecs had won three straight games and five of six. SDSU is 3-9 in road games this season and is led in scoring by junior guard Trey Kell (13.2 ppg) and sophomore guard Jeremy Hemsley (13.2 ppg). Sophomore forward Zylan Cheatham is third in scoring (9.3 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg). Kell is the team’s assist leader (2.8).
