RUNNIN’ REBELS SIGN TWO DURING FIRST WEEK OF SPRING SIGNING PERIOD
Rashad Vaughn and Cody Doolin will enroll at UNLV this summer
The UNLV men’s basketball program has received a signed national letter of intent from Rashad Vaughn and a signed financial aid agreement from Cody Doolin during the first week of the spring signing period, head coach Dave Rice announced Thursday. Both student-athletes will enroll at UNLV this summer.
Vaughn, a 6-foot-6-inch, 210-pound guard, will be a freshman this fall. Originally from Golden Valley, Minn., he is coming to UNLV from Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nev. A five-star prospect, he is rated as the No. 7 overall player in the country by Rivals, and No. 19 overall and No. 4 at his position in the ESPN 100 rankings.
A McDonald’s All-American, Vaughn averaged 19.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game for the Pilots, which reached the semifinals of the National High School Championship this year and recorded a 31-5 record. He shot 52 percent from the field, 43 percent from 3-point range and 77 percent from the free-throw line as a senior.
Vaughn scored 14 points and had five rebounds in the McDonald’s All-American game in Chicago on April 3 and will play in the Jordan Brand Classic on Friday night in New York.
“Rashad is a great addition to our team,” Rice said. “He is an explosive scorer and is terrific making plays for others. Rashad is a high-level competitor and has a tremendous work ethic. He is a fantastic teammate and leader, and is a multi-dimensional player.”
Doolin, a 6-foot-2-inch, 170-pound point guard from Austin, Texas, is transferring to UNLV from San Francisco where he will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He played three full seasons (2010-13) for the Dons before playing in just four games this past year.
A two-time All-West Coast Conference honorable mention selection, Doolin was also twice named to the league’s all-academic team and earned Capital One Academic All-District VIII honors as a junior (2012-13). At USF, he started all 103 games he appeared in and scored over 1,000 points. He also dished out 451 assists (4.4 apg) and has a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.2.
In high school he was named Central Texas’ Player of the Year after leading Westlake High to a district title. He was also twice named his district’s MVP and graduated as the school’s all-time scoring and assist leader.
“We are excited for Cody to join our team,” Rice said. “He is a true point guard and natural leader. He is a very capable scorer but is at his best leading and making plays for others. He brings tremendous experience and a commitment to team.”
Vaughn and Doolin join Dwayne Morgan and Goodluck Okonoboh to make up UNLV’s 2014 recruiting class. Morgan, a five-star prospect that has been rated as high as No. 15 overall in the country, is a 6-foot-7-inch, 215-pound senior forward from Baltimore, Md., who attends St. Frances Academy. Okonoboh, also a five-star prospect, is a 6-foot-9-inch, 215-point center from Woburn, Mass., who is a senior at Wilbraham & Monson Academy and has been rated as high as the No. 4 center in his class in the ESPN 100 rankings and No. 21 overall.
