RUNNIN’ REBELS TO HOST NEW MEXICO WEDNESDAY NIGHT

After playing two straight games on the road, the UNLV men’s basketball team will be back at home at the Thomas & Mack Center to host New Mexico on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. 5,000 Rally Towels, presented by Cox Communications, will be given to fans.
The Runnin’ Rebels lost both of their last two games – at Boise State last Tuesday in overtime (82-73) and at San Diego State on Saturday (53-47). Prior to that, UNLV defeated San José State (74-40) in its last home game on Jan. 10.
UNLV, which had to replace all five starters from a year ago, has used a rotation this season that includes five freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors. Freshman guard Rashad Vaughn leads the team in scoring with an average of 17.5 ppg, which is third in the Mountain West. Sophomore forward Christian Wood has 10 double-doubles this year, which ranks ninth in the country, and has averages of 14.1 ppg (second on the team, 8th in MW), and team highs of 9.6 rpg (1st in MW, 23rd in the country) and 2.9 bpg (2nd in MW, 14th in the country). Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh is second on the team and third in the MW in blocks, also with 2.9 per game (15th in the country, 2nd among all freshmen). Senior guard Cody Doolin leads the squad and MW with 4.3 apg and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.0, which leads the conference and is 21st nationally.
As a team, the Runnin’ Rebels are second in the nation in total blocks (132), third in blocks per game (7.3 bpg), fifth in defensive rebounds per game (28.33) and 18th in field-goal percentage defense (37.5).
Wednesday night’s game will be televised on CBS Sports Network with Carter Blackburn and Pete Gillen calling the action, and Lauren Gardner reporting from the sidelines. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM in Las Vegas.
