OLEKAIBE WAIVER APPROVED BY NCAA

UNLV now awaits word from Mountain West on relief from intra-conference transfer rule

The NCAA has approved a waiver submitted by UNLV that grants relief from the mandatory one-year residency requirement, allowing UNLV senior guard Kevin Olekaibe to play for the Runnin’ Rebels immediately. The Mountain West Conference must now approve the waiver submitted by UNLV that will grant relief from the penalties associated with its intra-conference transfer rule.

UNLV hopes to get a decision prior to the first regular season game, which is Friday.

“We are thankful to the NCAA for approving this waiver on its merit,” UNLV men’s basketball head coach Dave Rice said. “We are pleased for Kevin and his family. We will now await approval from the Mountain West Conference.”

Olekaibe transfered to UNLV from Fresno State, where he played for three years and scored a total of 1,169 career points. Last season he played in all 30 games, with 24 starts, for the Bulldogs and recorded averages of 8.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game
