Runnin’ Rebels to face Fresno State on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center
After a thrilling, triple-overtime win (108-102) over Air Force on Wednesday in the first round of the Mountain West tournament, the UNLV men’s basketball team will face Fresno State in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 10 at 6 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV is the No. 7 seed, while the Bulldogs are the No. 2 seed.
Wednesday’s game marked the first time a MW tournament contest went to three overtime periods, and at the end, the Runnin’ Rebels were down to just three scholarship players.
UNLV (18-14) has been playing severely shorthanded near the end of this season. On Wednesday, the Runnin’ Rebels had just six scholarship players available. Senior guard Jerome Seagears has been playing through a heel injury, while freshman forward Derrick Jones Jr. is ineligible after UNLV was notified of his canceled ACT score last week.
Junior forward Ben Carter is out for the season with a torn ACL, freshman forward Stephen Zimmerman Jr. missed five straight games with a knee injury before returning Feb. 27 vs. Wyoming, and sophomore forward Dwayne Morgan hurt his shoulder and has missed the last five games.
Fresno State (22-9) enters Thursday’s game having won six straight games and eight of its last nine. The Bulldogs ended their regular season with an 86-85 road win at Utah State on Saturday.
Thursday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network with Andrew Catalon and Steve Lappas calling the action. Evan Washburn will report from the sidelines. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio broadcast, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM. All internet links along with live stats will be available at UNLVRebels.com.
