UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: McCoy On Wooden Award’s Midseason Top 25 List

MCCOY ON WOODEN AWARD’S MIDSEASON TOP 25 LIST

UNLV men’s basketball’s freshman forward considered one of the top-25 frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor

UNLV men’s basketball freshman forward Brandon McCoy is on The John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy’s Midseason Top 25 list, which was announced Thursday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The list will be featured tonight on ESPN2 at 10 p.m. PT.

The award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball, presented annually to the top player in the country. McCoy is one of just six freshmen on the list. He is also one of just five players to debut on the midseason list after not appearing in the preseason top 50 and is the only player from the Mountain West to earn the nod.

The Chicago, Illinois, native has led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 13-4 overall record this season, and is tops in both scoring (19.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.9) rpg. McCoy, who was named the Mountain West’s Preseason Freshman of the Year, has earned conference player of the week honors twice this season and has recorded 10 double-doubles on the year (ninth in the nation). He is shooting 61.9 percent from the field.

McCoy is the first Runnin’ Rebel to be included on the Wooden Award’s Midseason Top 25 list since Mike Moser and Anthony Bennett appeared on it in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. Larry Johnson is UNLV’s only winner of the Wooden Award (1991).

The Midseason Top 25 list was chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on performances during the first half of the 2017-18 season. The 10-player Wooden All-American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament, while the winner will be presented during the ESPN College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s on Friday, April 6.

The Runnin’ Rebels recorded a victory on Wednesday night at Air Force and have a bye this weekend. The team will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 vs. New Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center. The 7 p.m. game will be a Black Out. Fans are encouraged to wear black UNLV gear to the game and the first 750 students in attendance will receive a free black t-shirt.

Tickets may be purchased at UNLVtickets.com, by calling 702-739-FANS (3267) or by visiting the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office.
