MCCOY ON KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR AWARD WATCH LIST

UNLV men’s basketball‘s freshman forward named one of the top 10 centers in the country

UNLV men’s basketball freshman forward Brandon McCoy has been named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award Watch List.

McCoy has been recognized as one of the top 10 collegiate centers in the country by the organization and is a candidate for the 2018 award named after Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The annual award is now in its fourth year and recognizes the top centers in men’s college basketball.

A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.

In March, five finalists will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner will be honored at ESPN’s College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, April 6.

McCoy was also named to two midseason watch lists earlier this season: The John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy’s Midseason Top 25 and to the Lute Olson Award Midseason Watch List.

The Chicago, Illinois, native has led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 17-7 overall record this season, and is tops on the team in both scoring (17.6 ppg) and rebounding (9.9) rpg. McCoy, who was named the Mountain West’s Preseason Freshman of the Year, has earned conference player of the week honors twice this season and has recorded 12 double-doubles on the year (13th in the nation). He is shooting 59.1 percent from the field and is on pace to set the league’s freshman scoring average record.

The Runnin’ Rebels are coming off a victory at No. 23 UNR and host Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center. There will be a pregame Kid Zone in the Mendenhall Center starting at 3:30 p.m. The first 3,000 fans at the game will receive a free foam finger courtesy of UMC and the first 300 fans will receive a voucher for a free popcorn.

Tickets may be purchased at UNLVtickets.com, by calling 702-739-FANS (3267) or by visiting the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office. The Family Fun Pack is also available for this game (four tickets, hot dogs and drinks for only $56).
