Runnin’ Rebel forward honored by conference for second time in three weeks
For the second time in three weeks, UNLV freshman forward Brandon McCoy was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The Chicago native, who came to UNLV out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 2-0 record last week with victories over Oral Roberts (92-66) and Illinois (89-82) at MGM Grand Garden Arena. For the week, he averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.
In UNLV’s win over Oral Roberts on Tuesday, McCoy scored 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field. He also pulled down six rebounds and blocked four shots. He recorded his seventh double-double of the season against the Big Ten’s Fighting Illini on Saturday with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
McCoy shot 65.2 percent (15 of 23) from the field during the two games. He currently ranks fifth in the nation in double-doubles.
It is finals week at UNLV so the team has a week between games. The Runnin’ Rebels will be back in action this Saturday, Dec. 16 at Pacific.
UNLV’s next home game will be Wednesday, Dec. 20 vs. Mississippi Valley State at the Thomas & Mack Center. The second annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place at halftime with all stuffed toys donated to the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation. The first 500 fans to bring a stuffed toy will receive a $5 concession voucher.
Tickets may be purchased at UNLVtickets.com, by calling 702-739-FANS (3267) or by visiting the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office.
