UNLV STUDENT-ATHLETES CONTINUE TO GRADUATE AT HIGHER RATE THAN GENERAL STUDENT POPULATION
NCAA released its most recent Graduation Success Rate and Federal Graduation Rate on Wednesday
UNLV student-athletes continue to graduate at a higher rate than the general student population as the NCAA released its most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) on Wednesday.
The current data shows the academic successes of the student-athletes who initially enrolled full-time at UNLV during the Fall 2011 semester. UNLV’s GSR for student-athletes in the 2011 cohort was 78 percent and its FGR for student-athletes was 69 percent. The 69-percent, 2011 cohort FGR for student-athletes is 27 percentage points higher than the general student population at UNLV.
UNLV student-athletes turned in two straight semesters of collective grade point averages of at least 3.0 for the first time in history. In 2017-18, 55 percent of UNLV student-athletes achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater, up from 49 percent the year prior. In addition, 121 student-athletes were named to the Dean’s Honor List (requires a semester grade point average of 3.5 or greater) for Fall 2017 and 109 were recognized in Spring 2018.
More than 90 UNLV student-athletes earned their degrees in 2017-18, while all seven UNLV athletic programs tied or broke their highest multi-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate score (most recent data – 2016-17 year). For the 10th consecutive year, all UNLV sports programs have exceeded the required minimum of 930 (all but one exceeded a score of 950).
FGR assesses first-time, full-time freshmen in a given group and only counts them as academic successes if they graduate from their institution of initial enrollment within a six-year period. It makes no accommodation for transfers into or out of an institution. It is, however, the only measure that allows a direct comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.
GSR begins with the Federal unit, and adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees and non-scholarship students (in specified cases) to the sample. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the unit of their initial institution. This rate provides a more complete and accurate look at actual student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in Division I athletics and tracking their academic outcomes.
