UNLV Athletics will create and supply at least 3,000 cloth masks to UMC of Southern Nevada for use in the community, thanks to the support of Nike and the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education.
Rebel student-athletes, coaches, staff and their families will make the masks at home, utilizing T-shirts supplied by Nike and the Agassi Foundation. The exclusive athletic footwear, apparel and accessories sponsor of UNLV Athletics, Nike has donated 1,000 T-shirts specifically for the production of homemade masks, while the Agassi Foundation has contributed another 200.
Once completed, the masks will be given to UMC, which will use them to assist underserved individuals through their satellite health centers now in place throughout Las Vegas.
“Recognizing we are in a critical period in fighting COVID-19, we want to help our community in any way we can,” UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois said. “This is just one way that we can do a small part to help in the fight. We appreciate the support of our partners at Nike, the Agassi Foundation and UMC.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending people wear cloth masks in public.
“We are proud and excited to team with great partners in UNLV Athletics and the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education to serve our community in this unique way especially given the growing need,” said UMC of Southern Nevada CEO Mason Van Houweling. “Above all, this step testifies to the spirit of unity shared and our unwavering confidence that, together, we will come through this stronger than we have ever been before.”
