The UNLV Golf Foundation has made a $100,000 donation to the Rebel Athletic Fund’s Momentum Fund in a move to support student-athlete scholarships during this unprecedented time, the athletics department announced Wednesday.
The gift is one of the largest one-time Annual Fund contributions from a single donor in department history.
“Our Las Vegas community has continued to come together when challenged,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed Francois. “We have seen over time that Rebels rise in the face of adversity to overcome and advance. This incredible gift is evidence of this unyielding spirit and we are grateful to Jeremy Anderson and the Golf Foundation for this generous investment in student-athlete success.”
The $100,000 donation will be used to support student-athlete scholarships for members of the men’s golf program and strategic initiatives essential to student-athlete growth and development during this extraordinary time of need.
“I attended UNLV on a full athletic scholarship,” said Jeremy Anderson, former Rebel All-American and UNLV Golf Foundation President. “I appreciate what a scholarship means to a student-athlete. To have a chance to make a difference with a scholarship gift is something that we, as a board, felt very passionate about, especially given the current circumstances. Thanks to our incredible Rebel Golf Foundation members, we are in position to contribute with this gift, which is in part a tribute to all those who have made Rebel Golf what it is today.”
“Over 30 years ago, we established the Rebel Golf Foundation with the success of Rebel Golf in mind,” said UNLV Men’s Golf Head Coach Dwaine Knight. “We’ve always understood that we are just a part of the larger UNLV Athletics family. We feel fortunate to have this chance to impact our department and community of student-athletes in such an important way. A sincere and genuine thank you to the members of the Rebel Golf Foundation for what is truly a transformational gift.”
In recognition, the Athletics Department will honor the Golf Foundation as a Championship Investor in the Momentum Fund, with the Golf Foundation joining a small circle of stakeholders demonstrating unique generosity during this time.
This donation comes less than a week after a $40,000 gift from the UNLV Soccer Foundation was announced.
The Momentum Fund originally debuted in March of this year, before evolving into the D5 Momentum Fund 2.0 in August as the athletics department, which is facing unprecedented financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, looks to overcome the loss of ticket and premium sales revenue. The new focus has a goal of raising $1.5 million from donors by the end of the calendar year.
