The UNLV Lady Rebels and the UNLV Athletic Department will be honoring the 30th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, February 6, by hosting a free sports clinic as well as honoring several notable women in the Las Vegas community at the Lady Rebel home game later that afternoon.
The day will start with the free sports clinic, as players and staff from several athletic teams at UNLV, including the basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, softball, golf and pom teams will be helping to run the event for kids (girls and boys) between 2nd and 8th grades at the Mendenhall Center. Doors open at 11:45 for registration while the clinic starts at 12:30 pm with different stations spread out over the Mendenhall Center and the practice courts at the Cox Pavilion. Following the clinic, all participants are invited to attend the UNLV Lady Rebels contest against Fresno State for free, with the game starting at 3 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
At the Lady Rebel contest, Mayor Carolyn Goodman will be presented with an honorary game ball, while several other women will be recognized through out the game for their accomplishments and for their contributions to Las Vegas and to the sports community.
The UNLV-Fresno State contest will also be Rebel Kids Club day, and there will be more activities for kids outside of the clinic including bounce houses on the Cox Pavilion concourse as part of the Kids Zone starting at 2 pm. All participants in the sports clinic will receive free t-shirts, while the first 200 fans to the basketball game will also receive a free t-shirt. Advance tickets bought online for the game at UNLVTickets.com are just $5, while kids 12 and under are always free at UNLV Lady Rebel contests.
NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports, starting back in 1987. The national-wide celebration is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, and the theme for 2016 is “Leading The Way!”
