United Way of Southern Nevada Kicks Off Tax Season
with “Earn It Keep It Save It” Program, January 25
United Way of Southern Nevada is hosting a tax season kick off celebration on Friday, January 25 at its headquarters located at 5830 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89103 from 10am to 11am to raise awareness of its free tax preparation sites available through the “Earn It Keep It Save It” program.
“In our fifth year of the program, United Way is again providing help to the community through free tax preparation by IRS trained and certified volunteers at more than 30 sites across the Las Vegas Valley,” said Cass Palmer, United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO. “This program is part of our financial stability initiative, which helps families gain financial independence.”
Hosted by United Way’s President and CEO Cass Palmer with dignitary speakers, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and City of Henderson Councilwoman Gerri Schroder, the event will provide information regarding Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that will open starting Sunday, January 27.
Households with an income of less than $51,000 in 2012 can receive free tax preparation and may be eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund of up to $5,891. The EITC is one of the nation’s most effective anti-poverty programs for low-income, working taxpayers.
In addition to more than 30 VITA sites across the Las Vegas Valley that will be open January 27 through April 15, United Way is organizing two large-scale tax preparation days that are open to the public:
- Super Saturday, February 23, 2013 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. HopeLink 178 Westminster Way, Henderson, NV 89015
- Super Saturday, March 16, 2013 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA 4141 Meadows Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89107
In 2010 through 2012, the “Earn It Keep It Save It” collaborative prepared more than 11,500 tax returns and provided more than $15.3 million in tax refunds back into the community.
The public can dial 2-1-1 or visit uwsn.org/free-tax-help or go to eksnv.org to find the nearest tax preparation site, eligibility requirements and documents they will need to bring to the tax site.
