Robert Tilley has been hired as assistant coach for pole vault for the UNLV track & field program, head coach Carmelita Jeter announced Tuesday.
Tilley has over 30 years of coaching experience, most recently serving as the owner and head coach of the Pure Sky Vaulting Club, which is located in Henderson. Serving in that role since 2006, he organized training, oversaw the safety and daily operations of the club, and scheduled meets.
The Henderson, Nevada, native started his coaching career in 1992 as assistant coach for pole vault at Green Valley High School, a position he held until 2010. He then coached the pole vaulters and jumpers at Basic High School until 2020.
Tilley has coached notable student-athletes such as 2017 Sunset and Sunrise Region champion Gabby Carson, helping her to break the region record with a 12-11 performance in the pole vault. She would go on to compete for the University of Oklahoma. He has also coached several NCAA Division I student-athletes that have gone to compete at programs such as the University of Arizona (Malaya Abueg) and Grand Canyon University (Austin Tilley).
“I am very excited to have Coach Tilley join the Rebel Family,” Jeter said. “His expertise will allow me to give more female student-athletes the ability to compete at the collegiate level. Adding pole vault opportunities to the roster will make us a whole team and allow us to have representation in all event areas. I can’t wait for Coach Tilley to get started with recruiting the 2024 class!”
UNLV’s outdoor season begins this upcoming weekend at the University of Arizona’s Spring Break Fiesta meet. The one-day is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, with the first event beginning at 9 a.m. PT.
