THE MOB MUSEUM INTRODUCES SENIOR OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Seniors can participate in new programming throughout the month of June offered by The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. These educational outreach programs enhance the Museum’s existing community initiatives by meeting specific needs in its immediate neighborhoods and beyond.

Created to improve the quality of life for low-income seniors, nearly 20 free multimedia presentations will take place this month at community locations regularly visited and easily accessed by this population. Utilizing Museum objects, Museum educators will encourage interaction and dialogue among the participants. Addressing Las Vegas’ Mob history from the 1950s to the 1980s, the presentations were designed to elicit personal recollections of that era from the participants. As a result of the first presentations, Museum educators have already collected intriguing firsthand stories from attendees and received expressions of interest from them in becoming volunteers.

Two presentations are open to the public:

  • June 21, 10 a.m.
Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Avenue, Las Vegas, NV, 89107
  • June 28, 10 a.m.
Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road, Las Vegas, NV, 89101

“With this outreach, we intend to foster intellectual stimulation and sense of fellowship among our community’s seniors,” explains Kimberly Kindig, senior director of strategic partnerships. “While our educators are delighted at the opportunity to share their knowledge of Mob history with this audience, we are equally enthusiastic to hear their stories, too.”

New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) financing, federal tax credits obtained with the support of the City of Las Vegas’ non-profit Las Vegas Community Investment Corporation (LVCIC), enabled the Museum to launch these programs. To qualify for NMTCs, a project must be located in and benefit a low-income community, the developer must have direct ownership or investment in the project and have sufficient financing for the NMTCs to augment. NMTCs assist with up to 20 percent of a project’s expense and enable the developer to receive low-cost, flexible financing. Once the Museum’s improvement project is complete in 2018, new operating revenue streams will support these vital community endeavors.

Three other Museum initiatives made possible by these tax credits will address other community populations, including low-income students, youth and families. Programs geared for these audiences will be announced shortly.
