 The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces events taking place in January 2018:

Courtroom Conversation: Digital Swindlers: Organized Crime Infects the Internet, Thursday, January 11, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. In the digital age, cybercrime is big business for organized crime syndicates around the globe. One of the FBI’s top national authorities on the topic will join experts in the field of cybersecurity and information technologies for a comprehensive and compelling discussion exploring how organized crime thrives on exploiting the virtual world. Attendees will learn about cybercrime, cyber warfare, cybersecurity and how to protect themselves from cybercriminals. The panel will explore the impact of global criminal networks, as well as practical online security for businesses and individuals. Industry experts Scott S. Smith, Dan Manson, Hayden Williams and Michael Spangler will further discuss the scope and activities of global criminal networks, online security, the role of organized crime in online criminal activities—from credit card and identity fraud to illegal gambling and online trafficking. Additional topics will also be drawn from current events: The number of cyberattacks in the U.S., Bitcoin and Block Chain, Russian hacking and influence on the U.S. election and the Equifax data breach. Guest takeaways will include tips on protection for businesses and individuals and how to secure important files. Daytime Program: Block 17, Saturday, January 20, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Mob Museum hosts speaker Alan Mattay for a daytime program on the history of Block 17. The historic African-American neighborhood in Las Vegas is partially located in what is now known as downtown. Guests will hear about the small black community, founded in 1905 and how it was essential to Las Vegas’ growth. Discussion includes the racial climate of early Las Vegas, waves of black migration and how the integration of segregation affected the residents of Block 17. Attendance to this daytime program includes FREE Museum Admission.

Community Safety Forum: Personal Safety – Self-Defense Tips, Sunday, January 21, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The monthly Community Safety Forum, held in partnership with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and generously sponsored by NV Energy, will explore personal safety and self-defense tips. Attendees will learn ways to protect themselves in locations where they are most vulnerable, such as public spaces and parking lots. Experts will enumerate potential vulnerabilities, how to protect oneself against violent crime and general situational awareness. Attendance at the event includes FREE Museum admission; registration is required.
