Juicy J
In 2006, Juicy J, the founding member and front man of Southern hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song (“Hard Out Here For a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow). While most artists would look forward, Juicy J, born Jordan Michael Houston, decided to return to square one. He spent the next years creating a street team, shooting videos and releasing mixtapesall in the name of the collective Three 6 buzz. However, in addition to furthering the group, the rapper found a solo career that transformed him from one part of a colossal whole to a standalone superstar. Along the way, Juicy J met Wiz Khalifa and earned a spot in his exclusive touring rap crew the Taylor Gang. The experience inspired the rapper to build a foundation of his own called the “Trippy Movement.” The rapper’s debut solo project, Stay Trippy, has already gotten fans’ attention. Its single “BandzA Make Her Dance,” originally released on Juicy J’s Twitter page, is certified Platinum. As a solo act, Juicy J strives to record tracks that still appeal to Three 6 Mafia members, but speak to hip-hop’s next generation as well. While bridging the gap between old and new fans under one trippy umbrella, he has cracked a code most veteran rappers struggle to decipher. There is no doubt that making uncompromised music that anyone can relate to is Juicy J’s forte.

Interpol
Although formed during the late ’90s, Interpol rose to international stardom in 2002 as part of New York City’s post-punk revival. The group took its cues from Joy Division and the Chameleons, fashioning a darkly atmospheric sound helmed by intricate guitars and Paul Banks’ somber baritone. Interpol also had a striking visual presence marked by its members’ fondness for suits, which only strengthened their stately, British-influenced appeal. Following Greg Drudy’s departure, Interpol became a core trio comprised of Paul Banks (vocals and guitar), Daniel Kessler (guitar) and Sam Fogarino (drums). Hypnotic, bizarre and always indelible, the band never ceases to amaze.

Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires
Soul and R&B singer Charles Bradley didn’t become a recording artist by taking the easy route. Born in Gainesville, Florida in 1948 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Bradley spent a good part of his childhood living on the streets. A transformational moment came when his sister took him to see James Brown at the Apollo Theater in 1962, and Bradley was struck by the singer’s energy and stage manner. Bradley escaped Brooklyn by joining the Job Corps and then spent years moving around the country and working odd jobs, before he eventually relocated back to Brooklyn to work on his dream of becoming a musician. Bradley began performing his James Brown-inspired routines in local clubs such as Black Velvet, where he attracted a loyal following and eventually capturing the attention of Gabriel Roth from Daptone Records. Roth immediately brought the singer into label sessions, releasing a single, “Take It as It Comes,” showcasing what Bradley had to offer as a vocalist. During this time he also met guitarist Thomas Brenneck, who released Bradley’s full album, No Time for Dreaming (2011), on his Daptone Records sub-imprint, Dunham Records. The singer received global acclaim for the album and toured relentlessly to support it. His follow-up, Victim of Love, was released in the spring of 2013.

Emily King
Singer/songwriter Emily King grew up surrounded by the music of her parents, jazz vocal duo Kim and Marion. By her late teens, she was playing shows in restaurants and venues around her hometown of New York City. In 2004, King gained the attention of famed producer Chucky Thompson who introduced her to music mogul Clive Davis. The meeting led to a recording contract with J Records/Sony Music and the release of King’s debut album East Side Story, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album of the year. King has toured with John Legend and Floetry and opened for major artists, including Gnarles Barkley, Chaka Khan and Erykah Badu, before parting ways with her label in 2008. She continues to work independently, releasing albums recorded in her home such as the July 2011 EP entitled Seven. King’s carefully crafted compositions are the perfect vehicle for her polished, lush vocals that harbor both an innocence and honesty. A gentle mix of soul, folk and rock influences, King’s music emotes the kind of straight-to-the-point storytelling that’s reminiscent of singer/songwriters of the ‘70s.
