The UNLV men’s basketball team (13-4, 2-2 MW), winner of seven of its last nine games, will host New Mexico (8-11, 3-3 MW) on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The game is being planned as a Black Out with all fans encouraged to wear black UNLV gear to the game. The first 750 students in attendance will receive a free black t-shirt. The Runnin’ Rebels will be wearing their black uniforms.
Also, the first 300 fans through the door will receive a free $5 concession voucher. Single-game tickets and mini plans may be purchased at UNLVtickets.com or (702) 739-FANS.
The Runnin’ Rebels, who had a bye this past weekend, are coming off an 81-76 win at Air Force last Wednesday, improving their Mountain West record to 2-2. It marked their first win in Colorado Springs since 2014.
UNLV went 11-2 during non-conference play this season with their only two losses coming in overtime – at Northern Iowa and vs. Arizona (now ranked No. 14/17) at home.
The Runnin’ Rebels are fourth in the country in field-goal percentage (51.4), seventh in scoring (88.2 ppg), 15th in rebounding (41.0 rpg) and 17th in assists (17.9 apg). Individually, freshman forward Brandon McCoy and junior forward Shakur Juiston rank in the top 22 in the country in rebounding. McCoy is 21st with 9.9 rpg, while Juiston is 22nd, also with 9.9 rpg. UNLV is the only team in the nation with two top-22 rebounders. McCoy ranks 10th in double-doubles with 10, while Juiston is 35th with seven. Senior guard Jordan Johnson is 14th in the nation in assists with 6.4 apg.
The 2017-18 season marks the second under head coach Marvin Menzies for the Runnin’ Rebels. Menzies and his staff brought in a recruiting class for this year that has been ranked as high as No. 12 in the country and features McCoy, who was a McDonald’s High School All-American, and Juiston, last year’s National Junior College Player of the Year. The Runnin’ Rebels also returned their leading scorer from last season – senior guard Jovan Mooring. Four Runnin’ Rebels are averaging double figures, led by McCoy’s 18.6 ppg, which ranks fourth in the Mountain West.
Wednesday’s game will be broadcast by ESPN3 with Trey Bender and Blaine Fowler calling the action. Jon Sandler and former Runnin’ Rebel Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM and online via the UNLV Gameday App and TuneIn (link at UNLVRebels.com).
