RUNNIN’ REBELS EARN NABC’S TEAM ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR FIRST TIME

Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic bracket announced; Runnin’ Rebels will play host Hawaii on ESPNU in first round

 

The UNLV men’s basketball team has earned the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award for the first time, the organization announced Wednesday.
 
Created by the NABC Committee on Academics, the awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2017-18 season. This year marks the sixth season of the program.
 
For the first time in Runnin’ Rebel history, the team recorded two consecutive semesters with a GPA over 3.0 (Fall 2017, Spring 2018).
 
In order to earn the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA must count the GPAs of all student-athletes who competed during the 2017-18 season.
 
 
Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Bracket Announced: The bracket for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, Dec. 22-25, was also announced Wednesday. 
 
The Runnin’ Rebels will open the tournament vs. host Hawaii on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. PT (ESPNU), and will then face either Colorado or Indiana State on Sunday, Dec. 23 at 1:30 p.m. PT (ESPN2) or 4 p.m. PT (ESPNU). 
 
The four other teams include Bucknell, Charlotte, Rhode Island and TCU.

UNLV IN 2018-19: Head Coach Marvin Menzies enters his third season at the helm of the program in 2018-19. The Runnin’ Rebels return seven players plus two transfer redshirts from their 20-win season in 2017-18. It marked a nine-game improvement in the win column from the previous year and was UNLV‘s first 20-win season since 2013-14. The program’s 2018 recruiting class includes four newcomers (all freshmen) and has been ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West.
