(unlvrebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team was selected to finish in fifth place in the Mountain West this season, the league announced on Wednesday. The 2024 MW Preseason Poll was voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.

Colorado State collected eight first-place votes and is atop the poll. Last season, the Rams recorded a 12-6 conference record and finished as the conference tournament’s runner-up at the end of the 2023 season. Utah State received two first-place votes of their own and are predicted to finish second this season. The Aggies return two key contributors from last season, both earning 2024 Preseason All-MW honors.

UNLV earned the poll’s final first-place vote and 65 points, behind Boise State’s 77 and Fresno State’s 71. The Rebels return five of their six starters from last season, including two of their 2023 All-MW Honorable Mention student-athletes in Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos and Jordyn Freeman. The Rebels finished ahead of six other MW programs in the poll, including Wyoming, San Diego State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Air Force and UNR.

The MW sent two teams to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, marking the second year in a row and 15th time in league history that the conference had multiple bids in the Big Dance. Fresno State earned the automatic bid after winning the conference tournament championship, while Utah State also earned a spot with its 24-6 record last season and the MW regular-season title.

UNLV and Wyoming also made postseason appearances in the 2023 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. It was the Scarlet & Gray sixth-straight season of postseason play. The Rebels’ invitation marked their fourth in that event since the 2018 season, qualifying last season under head coach Malia Shoji in her first season.

As the UNLV volleyball team prepares for the 2024 season, fans will have the chance to see the Rebels in action before the season starts. On Saturday, Aug. 24, the program will host Utah Tech in an exhibition match at 12 p.m.

The Scarlet & Gray open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, in the second game of the day in The Rebel Challenge at Cox Pavilion. The Rebels are slotted to host Northwestern at 6 p.m. after the conclusion of the Iowa State / Pacific neutral contest right before it. UNLV will then face off against both of those previously mentioned programs later in the weekend. The team’s MW  schedule begins on Thursday, Sept. 26 on the road at New Mexico..
