The Hustlin’ Rebels fell to UC San Diego, 15-1, during the first ever matchup in program history for both teams Friday morning at the Triton Ballpark. This game is part of the 2023 Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament held in San Diego, featuring UCSD, UC Irvine, USD, WSU, ND State and Hawai’i.
UNLV dropped to 3-2, while UCSD improved to 2-3.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Rylan Charles went 1-for-2 at the plate with his second double of the season.
TURNING POINT: The Tritons took the lead early in the contest with a home run in the bottom half of the first frame. After a 2 RBI triple and a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the third inning, the Tritons secured the lead, 8-0.
Nic Gregson (1-0) earned his first win of the season after pitching 2.0 frames of relief and allowing only one hit.
Noah Beal (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after going 3.0 innings of work and allowing eight runs on seven hits and only one strikeout.
UP NEXT: UNLV will continue the 2023 Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. against UC Irvine followed by a contest against USD set for 6 p.m., Monday’s contest against Washington State is slated for 1 p.m.
NOTES AND NEWS
– The 31 runs scored by the Hustlin’ Rebels on Sunday, February 19 marked the second most runs scored in program history, the first being 37 runs scored against San Jose State in 1986.
– The Tritons now own the all-time record between both programs, 1-0.
