YOUNG TAKES THIRD PLAYER OF THE WEEK VOTE
UNLV junior center led the Mountain West in scoring last week
For the third time this season and seventh time in her career, UNLV junior center Desi-Rae Young was voted the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Young led all Mountain West players with 23 points per game last week and was second overall in rebounding with eight per game. The Desert Oasis graduate shot 16-for-24 (.667) from the field and made 14 of 16 (.875) free throws to lead UNLV in wins against Fresno State and at Boise State.
UNLV, now 24-2 overall and 14-0 in conference play, claimed at least a share of the Mountain West regular-season title and rose to No. 23 in the Associated Press Women’s Top 25 this week, the program’s first ranking since 1994.
The Lady Rebels have won 15 straight games and have the nation’s second-longest active winning streak behind No. 1 South Carolina.
Young’s 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists were all game highs in UNLV’s 76-63 win at Boise State. She scored seven points and dished an assist during UNLV’s 9-0 third-period scoring run that turned a 3-point deficit into a 6-point lead the Lady Rebels would carry to the finish line.
Young also captured three game highs in UNLV’s 64-63 win against Fresno State, counting 22 points, seven rebounds and three steams. Young dished the assist on Alyssa Durazo-Frescas’ game-winning 3.
