Background Info About The Wright Amendment
The Wright Amendment ended on Monday, October 13, 2014 after 35 years of not allowing Southwest to fly outside the surrounding states of Texas from Dallas.  The Wright Amendment was put into place in 1979 to really protect the other large airport in North Texas (DFW). Prior to 1979, Southwest only flew within Texas, expanding in 1979 by flying to its first non-Texas city- New Orleans.  Instead Southwest thrived and carries more than 100 million people annually, and now Dallas will have nonstop flights to 15 new cities in addition to the 16 it already serves. The new flights include destinations like Las Vegas, Chicago, and Denver just to name a few.  Las Vegas is one of the first cities.  Las Vegas is one of Southwest Airlines busiest airports, average just over 200 daily departures to 58 cities. Southwest also employs more than 3,000 People at the airport.
