MEL GOODWIN, PROGRAM DIRECTOR AT THE GAY & LESBIAN COMMUNITY CENTER OF SOUTHERN NEVADA, NAMED TO INAUGURAL TRANS 100 LIST
In partnership with GLAAD, We Happy Trans, This is H.O.W. and Chicago House, The Center’s own Program Director Mel Goodwin has been named to the first ever Trans 100 list – a nationwide accolade recognizing the breadth and diversity of work being done in, by, and for the transgender community across the United States.
Throughout the past five years, Goodwin – a genderqueer individual – has had the privilege of working alongside several hundred transgender Nevadans to create a more just and welcoming state. Their activism has spanned many areas, including advocating for trans-inclusive human rights laws (three of which were passed in 2011), co-founding Gender Justice Nevada, a trans-led and -focused organization, initiating and spearheading The Center’s first programs that affirm all trans identities, and sharing about gender diversity with all who will listen. Goodwin created and maintains the Southern Nevada transgender resource guide and was instrumental in the implementation of The Center’s gender neutral restroom – the first of its kind in the Valley.
