Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour, in Partnership with The Public Education Foundation, Announces “Why Reading is Magical” Essay Contest

Harrah’s Comedy-Magician Mac King and The Public Education Foundation announce an essay contest involving all Clark County School District fifth grade students. The essay challenge, “Why Reading is Magical”, will kick off this year’s Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour. The contest hopes to encourage young students’ passion for reading.

“Early on my grandfather passed along his love of books and reading,” says King. “I noticed pretty quickly that everyone I met who was a happy, successful adult loved to read. I look forward to hearing how reading makes these student’s lives magical.”

Each student is to turn in their essay by the end of Friday, October 3, to be reviewed by three judges. Once judged, three students will be selected as the first-, second-, and third-place winners. All three winning students will be given the chance to present their essays on stage with Mac King at the Vegas Valley Book Festival on Thursday, October 18, located at the Historic Fifth Street School in downtown Las Vegas. The first-place winner, along with his/her entire fifth grade class, will be awarded a trip to see The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah’s. This will include a meet-and-greet and photos with Mac King after the show.

Students can either email or mail their entries. If emailed, essays are to be sent to [email protected] by October 3 at 11:59 p.m. If mailed, all essays are to be sent to 2630 S. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89146 and postmarked by October 3 at 11:59 p.m.

Launched in 2011, Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour is in its fourth year of providing reading opportunities to local elementary school students. As well as performing at various schools across the valley, Mac King has created a book drive as the heart of the Literacy Tour, collecting and distributing more than 10,000 books. These books are gathered with the goal of making sure each student in the Clark County School District has at least one book of his or her very own.

About Mac King:
Now in his 15th year of headlining afternoons at Harrah’s Las Vegas, Comedy-Magician Mac King captivates audiences as he casts out a fishing line over their heads and catches live goldfish out of mid-air, performs amazing sleights-of-hand, makes his head completely disappear in a paper bag, and renders himself invisible, all while remaining unbelievably funny. Because of his quick wit and extensive audience interaction, no two shows are alike.

Sought after worldwide, King has made television appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and all five of NBC’s “The World’s Greatest Magic” TV specials. King is consistently praised by fellow magicians. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Teller, of Penn & Teller fame, called King “The best comedy magician in Vegas. He’ll fool you with his fantastically original tricks…” His numerous accolades include “Best Las Vegas Show” in the 2012 About.com Reader’s Choice Awards. Las Vegas Review-Journal named his show the “Best Bargain Show” for ten straight years (2003-2013), “Best Family Attraction” in 2012, and “Favorite Male Las Vegan” in 2008. In 2011, he was deemed “Best Strip Headliner” in the Las Vegas Weekly’s “Best Of” Awards. King has also been voted as Magic Magazine’s “Funniest Act in Magic,” the World Magic Awards’ “Best Comedy Magician” and the Magic Castle’s “Magician of the Year.”

King, one of today’s brightest and most talented magicians, takes the stage twice daily, Tuesday through Saturday, at Harrah’s Las Vegas at 1 and 3 p.m. in the Showroom Theatre.  Tickets are between $30.00 and $45.00 plus tax.
