Other chart-topping hits included “Juicy” and “New Jack Swing” from the group’s self-titled 1992 debut album.
Arrested Development released its debut album “3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of…” in 1992 to popular and critical praise. Das EFX’s introduced the world to their innovative sound with the release of their debut album “Dead Serious,” which went platinum and spawned hit singles including “They Want EFX,” “Mic Checka,” and “Straight Out the Sewer.” In 1993, they were featured on the popular Ice Cube track “Check Yo Self” with the refrain “Chiggedy-check yo self before you wriggedy-wreck yo self,” which would become part of popular lexicon for the better part of the 1990s.
CL Smooth achieved his first number-one single on the Hot Rap Tracks chart in 1992 with the release of “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” which was recorded by Pete Rock & CL Smooth. As a solo artist, he released his debut album “American Me” along with its eponymous lead single in 2006. He released a companion album, “The Outsider,” in 2007. Throughout his career, Smooth has collaborated with artists including Heavy D & The Boyz, Run-DMC, and John Legend & The Roots.
Rap superstar Coolio began his “Fantastic Voyage” in 1994 with the release of his debut solo album, “It Takes a Thief.” The following year, he made music history when he recorded “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the “Dangerous Minds” soundtrack with R&B singer LV. The song was met with commercial and critical acclaim, earning Coolio the GRAMMY for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1996. With more than 5.7 million copies sold, “Gangsta’s Paradise” ranks as one of best-selling singles of all time.
