In 1989, Vanilla Ice released his first album, Hooked, featuring his breakout hit “Ice Ice Baby.” The song eventually earned the spot as the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts. His follow-up album, To the Extreme, reached the top of charts later that year and before long, Vanilla Ice became a household name. After spending 16 weeks at the top of the album charts, To the Extreme sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.

Naughty by Nature was formed in East Orange, NJ, in 1986, while all three members – MCs Treach (Anthony Criss) and Vinnie (Vincent Brown), and DJ Kay Gee (Keir Gist) – were attending the same high school. The group’s self-titled debut was released in 1991 and produced a major hit in “O.P.P.” Naughty by Nature repeated their success with the 1993 follow-up album, 19 Naughty III, which included another smash single with “Hip Hop Hooray”; like its predecessor, the album went platinum and the group went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album of the Year before touring worldwide.

Among the first groups to tame rap’s hardcore mentality into a positive, message-oriented rhymes, Kid ‘n Play debuted in 1988 with the platinum album 2 Hype. The duo later spun their hit record into a deal involving films and a Saturday-morning cartoon show, the first involving a rap act. Kid (Christopher Reid) and Play (Christopher Martin) first met while in high school and were to Select Records in 1987. In 1988, along with the release of their popular debut album, the duo introduced the infamous Funky Charleston dance – a street-style riff on the classic Charleston. The moves were first performed in one of their music videos and then in the duo’s film “House Party.” People everywhere fixated on the Kid ‘n Play kickstep, and it quickly became one of the biggest dance crazes of the late ‘80s.
