2014 Big League Weekend Recap:

The Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets played a “two-game” Spring Training series on Saturday-Sunday, March 15-16 at Cashman Field. The teams split the series as the Mets won the opener, 9-4, and the Cubs then defeated the Mets, 6-3.

Big League Weekend attracted a two-day total attendance of 19,514. Saturday’s attendance was 9,106 and Sunday’s sellout crowd was 10,408.

Saturday, March 15:

The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs, 9-4, before a crowd of 9,106 at Cashman Field in the opener of the two-game “Big League Weekend” series. The game was broadcast nationally on WGN-TV America.

Second baseman Wilmer Flores (1-for-5) broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run, home run in the eighth inning. The Mets scored five runs over the final two innings.

The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman David Wright (1-for-3) delivered a two-run double to right centerfield. The Mets built a 4-1 lead after 2 ½ innings. Designated hitter Andrew Brown was 2-for-3, walk, double, 3 RBI.

The Cubs rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with two runs in the fourth inning and a solo run in the fifth.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was 2-for-3 with two home runs and 3 RBI. He hit a solo home run in the second inning and a two-run shot in the fourth inning off Mets starter, right-hander Bartolo Colon.

Colon pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 7 hits, 4 runs and struck out 1. Cubs starter, left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada, pitched 2 innings and allowed 5 hits and 4 runs.

Sunday, March 16:

The Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets, 6-3, before a sellout crowd of 10,408 at Cashman Field. The Cubs built a 5-0 lead after 3 ½ innings. Second baseman Arismendy Alcantara was 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the ninth inning. First baseman Daniel Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

First baseman Zach Lutz led the Mets with a 2-for-4 performance with a solo home run fifth inning. Outfielder Andrew Brown (1-for-4) added a two-run, home run in the sixth inning.

Left-hander Chris Rusin improved to 2-2 with 4 shutout innings. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 2. Right-hander Jenrry Mejia suffered the loss (0-1). He pitched 2.1 innings and allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), walked 2 and struck out 1.
