LADY REBELS TRAVEL TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR NEW YEAR’S DAY GAME

UNLV and San Jose State will tip-off on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Provident Credit Union Event Center

 

The UNLV Lady Rebels will hit the road to continue Mountain West play visiting San Jose State for a New Year’s Day game on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE: The Lady Rebels are 39-9 all-time in the series versus the Spartans. UNLV is undefeated (5-0) in the Lindy La Rocque era against San Jose State. The Lady Rebels have won five of the last six meetings in the series. UNLV and San Jose State only met once last season, with the Scarlet & Gray collecting a 91-55 victory at Cox Pavilion. The Spartans head into Wednesday’s contest with a 7-7 overall record and 0-1 in MW play. San Jose State opened league play against UNR and fell 63-59. The Spartans are currently being led by Finau Tonga who is averaging 10.3 points per game along with Sofia Kelemeni who is averaging 9.9 points per game, respectively. Djessira Diawara leads San Jose State in rebounds, bringing down 7.1 per game and Tonga is second on the squad with 5.3 rebounds per game.

SQUAD LEADERS: Amarachi Kimpson leads the Scarlet & Gray in points per game, averaging 13.5 and she is also tied for the team-lead in made field goals 4.8 per game. Kiara Jackson is the second leading scorer who is averaging 12.0 points per game and leads the Lady Rebels in assists with 5.0 per game. Meadow Roland is the leading rebounder on the squad bringing down 6.8 rebounds per game.

NON-CONFERENCE WRAP: The Lady Rebels played the 23rd toughest non-conference schedule in the nation finishing with a solid 8-4 performance. UNLV collected two double-digit wins over Power Conference teams with 19-point wins over both UCF (Big 12) and DePaul (Big East). The Scarlet & Gray played opponents from nine different conferences in their non-conference slate.

LAST TIME ON THE COURT:  The UNLV women’s basketball team opened Mountain West play with a 78-53 victory over Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Cox Pavilion. The Scarlet & Gray continue the streak and have not lost in a conference opener under head coach Lindy La Rocque. McKinna Brackens led the Lady Rebels with 15 points by shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Brackens also dished five assists, brought down eight rebounds and had two blocks. Alyssa Brown, Amarachi Kimpson and Meadow Roland each tallied 12 points apiece. Brown dished a team-high six assists, tying her career high. She also led the squad in blocks with three and was tied for the team-lead in rebounds with Brackens at eight. Kiara Jackson put up 10 points and secured her 1,000-career point in a Lady Rebels uniform. UNLV had its best shooting game from the field thus far in the season having shot 52.6% (30 of 57) from the field for the game

THREE-PEAT LAST SEASON: The Lady Rebels have continued to bring the heat last season, which culminated with a third consecutive Mountain West Regular Season and Tournament Titles. UNLV became the first program in MW history to claim both titles in three straight seasons. The Scarlet & Gray earned its third automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, a first in both program and league history. The Lady Rebels finished the season only one of two squads to have two (South Carolina) straight seasons with 30 wins. UNLV earned its highest ranking in both the AP and Coaches Poll coming in at No. 20 and No. 19. The Lady Rebels appeared in the Top-25 eight times this season and came into the season receiving votes for the first time in 19 years. UNLV claimed the MW’s Player of the Year in Desi-Rae Young (All-MW Team and All-Defensive Team), and Sixth and Freshman of the Year with Amarachi Kimspon (All-MW Team honorable mention and All-Freshman MW Team). Kiara Jackson earned All-MW team accolades and Alyssa Brown was named MW Tournament MVP.

WHAT UP SQUAD: The Lady Rebels return 10 of the 14 players from its 2024 championship squad, including two starters and Mountain West Sixth Player and Freshman of the Year Amarachi Kimpson. UNLV added two freshmen guards Teagan Colvin and Elli Guiney, and junior transfer Aaliyah Alexander from Eastern Washington.

UP NEXT: The Lady Rebels will play their third MW game of the week on Saturday, Jan. 4 at Boise State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT.
