UNLV SELECTED USBWA NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK

Winners of 13 straight, Lady Rebels host Fresno State Thursday at 5 p.m.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has voted UNLV as its national women’s basketball team of the week, the organization announced Tuesday.

UNLV scored 90-plus points in road wins at New Mexico and Air Force last week, extending its winning streak to 13 games. It’s the Lady Rebels’ longest winning streak since the 1993-94 season. The road sweep comes on the heels of the program’s first-ever sellout of the Cox Pavilion on Jan. 28.

UNLV is 22-2 overall and the lone unbeaten team (12-0) in Mountain West conference play.

On Monday, the Lady Rebels were chosen as the ESPN.com Team of the Week.

UNLV is one of Division I’s most efficient teams. The Lady Rebels rank in the top 25 in scoring offense, scoring margin, field goal percentage, rebound margin, assist-to-turnover ratio and fewest turnovers per game.

Player of the year candidate Desi-Rae Young leads the Lady Rebels with 17.8 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Her 13 double-doubles are the sixth most by an individual player this season.

The Lady Rebels host Fresno State on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 5 p.m. PT.  It is the UNLV Student Appreciation Game.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. The primary goal of the USBWA has remained constant since its inception: to serve the interests of journalists who cover college basketball.

The USBWA annually selects a national player, coach and freshman of the year in college basketball and All-America teams for both men and women.
