Lady Rebels Play Seton Hall on Saturday

LADY REBELS PLAY SETON HALL ON SATURDAY

 

UNLV and the Pirates will tip-off on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET at the Walsh Gymnasium 

The UNLV women’s basketball are headed to the East coast to close out the non-conference schedule. The Lady Rebels will first visit Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip-off is set for 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET and will be streamed on FloHoops with a subscription required.

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: The Lady Rebels and Pirates have not met and will face each other for the first time. Seton Hall is currently 7-3 and is coming off a 67-27 victory over FDU on Monday. The Hall has two players leading the squad in double-figures. Micah Gray is averaging 15.4 points per game and Azana Baines is averaging 14.9 points per game, respectively. Amari Wright is the Pirates’ and BIG EAST assist leader, dishing 6.5 assists per game. Seton Hall was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST. The Pirates added nine new faces to the program, which include three true freshmen and six transfers.

 

NON-CONFERENCE LADY REBEL LEADERS: With two games left on the non-conference slate, three Lady Rebels are currently averaging double-figures in scoring. Desi-Rae Young leads the squad with 19.0 points per game. Kiara Jackson is averaging 14.2 points per game and Alyssa Durazo-Frescas is averaging 11.6 points per game, respectively. Young also leads the team in rebounds (9.7 per game) and Jackson is the assist leader (5.4 per game).

 

LAST TIME ON THE COURT: Desi-Rae Young led the way with a career-high 32 points as UNLV handed Oklahoma (6-3) its first home loss of the season after the Lady Rebels defeated the Sooners 92-76. The Lady Rebels are 9-0 for the first time in over two decades and for the first time under head coach Lindy La Rocque. Young put up 21 points before halftime by shooting 14-for- 23 from the field and drained her first three-pointer of the season. In addition, Young brought down eight rebounds and had two steals. Kiara Jackson was the second leading scorer of the group, putting up 20 points by shooting 7-for-17 from the field, a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc and was 4-for-6 at the free throw line. Jackson led the team with five assists. Nneka Obizaor had one of her best games thus far this season scoring a season-high 14 points and bringing down a season-high nine rebounds. Alyssa Brown led the squad in boards with 10 and had a season-high nine points.

 

SQUAD UP: UNLV returns nine of the 12 players from its 2023 championship squad including three starters and Mountain West Sixth Player of the Year, Kiara Jackson and MVP of the Mountain West Championship, Desi-Rae Young. New to the squad this season are four freshmen, forward McKinna Brackens, point guard Amarachi Kimpson, guard Macy Spencer and forward Meadow Roland, and junior transfer Macie James, a forward from Oklahoma State.

 

LAST SEASON: The Lady Rebels are coming off another highly successful season that culminated with the second consecutive Mountain West Regular season title and Tournament title. UNLV received its second straight automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Rebels had one of their best program records since the 1989-90 season, finishing the regular season with a 28-2 record. UNLV’s undefeated MW season (18-0) was also its best since the 1992-92 season. Head Coach Lindy La Rocque was named Mountain West Coach of the Year for the second time in just three seasons. Four Lady Rebels earned All-Mountain West accolades last season: Kiara Jackson (Sixth Player of the Year), Essence Booker (All-Mountain West team), Justice Ethridge (All-Mountain West team & All-Defensive team), Desi-Rae Young (All-Mountain West team & All-Defensive team).
