Wednesday night is both the second meeting of the season between the UNLV Lady Rebels and their in-state rival UNR, and the second game in the Silver State Series, the all-sports competition between the two schools presented by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network. UNLV won the first meeting between the two in dramatic fashion, as senior LaTecia Smith sank a jumper after the buzzer for the game-winner in a 66-64 victory Jan. 22 in the Cox Pavilion. The second game will tip off at 6:30 pm in Lawlor Events Center.
There will be a live video stream available on the Mountain West Network, with the link also available on UNLVRebels.com. Wyatt Tomchek (play-by-play) and Mark Wasik (color analyst) will handle the radio broadcast, also on UNLVRebels.com.
UNLV Game Notes
♦ In addition to the rivalry, Wednesday’s game is important for both teams as UNLV looks to remain within distance of second place San Jose State, as the Spartans are 9-3 in league play while the Lady Rebels are 8-4. UNR meanwhile looks to keep moving up the standings after winning two straight on the road to improve to 5-8 in the conference.
♦ UNLV is winning off defense, as the Lady Rebels are currently first in the MW in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and rebound margin, as well as No. 1 in the nation in three-point field goal defense at 23.1%. The Lady Rebels have never finished the season first in the MW in either scoring defense or field goal defense, and is leading the league in rebound margin for the fifth straight season.
♦ The 2019-20 UNLV Lady Rebel squad are one of the youngest and least experienced teams in the Mountain West this season after graduating four senior starters. UNLV has 10 underclassmen on this year’s squad, with seven freshmen and three sophomores, while the four-member senior class had a total of two career starts (as a Lady Rebel) entering the season.
