The UNLV volleyball team continued to announce their 2024 season schedule on Tuesday, solidifying a match to host the University of Hawaii at Mānoa on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The contest is also set as the team’s annual Polynesian Night and will kick off at 6:30 p.m. PT.
“Hosting Hawaii in the ninth Island of Las Vegas is going to be a special event for both UH and Rebel Nation,” mentioned head coach Malia Shoji, “We want to sell out COX Pavilion for what will be a night full of love and support for both teams along with high level volleyball.”
The match serves as one of the many highlights in the soon-to-release nonconference schedule, marking the first meeting between the two programs since 2003 and the first time the Rainbow Wāhine visit Las Vegas since 1997. Hawaii ended the 2023 season receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The two teams matched unofficially this past spring, meeting during the 2024 Spring schedule as part of the Rebels’ exhibition games in Hawaii. The two teams went to a full five-set match at the Stan Sheriff Center, Hawaii emerging on top in the final score (25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 22-25, 15-13). Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos served as the top attacker for the Scarlet & Gray’s offense, topping the roster with 15 kills in the contest. The Rebels had two other student-athletes with double digit kills, Dakota Quinlan earning 12 and Chloe Thomas with 11.
Arien Fafard owned the majority of the team’s sets with 42 set assists on the night, earning a double-double with 11 digs in the contest. Quinlan joined her in the team’s 58 digs as the only other member of the roster that finished the match in double-digits in the statistical category (11). The frontline gave Hawaii’s offense plenty of trouble with 18 blocks, Fatima Sheriff earning the start in all five sets and being credited with a team-high six block assists. Thomas also took part in five block assists during the match as well.
