Rebels Claim Second Straight Road Draw At San José State

The UNLV men’s soccer team claimed its second straight road draw in a scoreless 90 minutes at San José State Sunday at Spartan Soccer Complex.

The Rebels (3-6-3, 0-1-3) moved their unbeaten streak to three matches, each of which has resulted in a tie following the result against the Spartans (3-4-6, 2-0-2). With the day’s outcome, the Scarlet & Gray finished a tough weekend road trip with two points in the WAC standings in back-to-back games against teams that remain unbeaten in conference play.

Nearly coming up with a goal for the Rebels in the 51st minute, junior Jonah Craig launched the ball on a free kick into the box that was sent into the net by senior captain Louis Hiepen. The play ultimately wound up being wiped away, however, as Hiepen was ruled offside.

The shutout marked the fourth of the season for UNLV’s backline, which stretched its streak of consecutive minutes without conceding a goal to 152 minutes. Additionally, sophomore goalkeeper Hugo Lemos notched his third clean sheet of the year after coming up with four saves on each of SJSU’s four shots on goal.

QUOTABLE: “It was another strong performance on the road against a well-coached San José State team. We controlled the game well and would have liked to have more of the ball, but we had a goal called back that would have made the difference in the end. We need to continue to improve each day. This group is battle-tested with the schedule we have played, which will help us down the stretch.”
