Ely, NV Announces Ward Mountain Trail Expansion Project

Visit White Pine County is excited to announce the launch of the Ward Mountain Trail Expansion project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing and expanding the mountain bike trail system in the region. This ambitious project, undertaken in collaboration with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), promises to elevate the outdoor recreation experience for both residents and visitors, while boosting the local tourism economy.

Over the next three years, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Ely Ranger District will oversee the implementation of this project, which involves the construction and reconstruction of approximately 40 miles of mountain bike trails. This initiative is designed to provide clear access to trailheads, create staging areas, and improve the overall safety and enjoyment of the trail system.

“We are thrilled to see this project come to life,” said Kyle Horvath, Director of Tourism for White Pine County. “We’re confident that the expanded and improved trail system will attract more visitors to White Pine County, enhancing our reputation as a premier outdoor recreation destination.”

Key highlights of the project include:

  • The trail system is located approximately one air mile southwest of Ely, Nevada, offering easy and quick access to both locals and tourists.
  • The project will see the construction and reconstruction of about 40 miles of mountain bike trails, providing enhanced recreational opportunities.
  • The project includes the reconstruction and improvement of between 5 and 8 miles of access roads to ensure passenger car accessibility to the trailheads.
  • Road and trail directional signs will be installed, and the entire trail system will be GPS mapped. A high-quality recreational trail map and brochure will be produced and made available to the public.
  • The project is a result of a partnership between the City of Ely, White Pine County, the Tourism and Recreation Board, and various other stakeholders who are committed to increasing tourism and recreational opportunities in the area.

Ward Mountain has long been a popular destination for mountain biking enthusiasts, and this project will significantly enhance the existing trail system. The Ely Ranger District has been working closely with the Great Basin Trails Alliance to identify and execute improvements to the trail network. A Secure Rural Schools RAC Grant awarded to the Great Basin Trails Alliance in 2017 enabled initial planning and design efforts for this comprehensive project.

“The Ward Mountain Trail Expansion project represents a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance recreational opportunities in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest,” said Erin Rajala, Recreation & Wilderness Program Manager with the Forest Service. “By partnering with the International Mountain Bicycling Association and the local community, we are committed to improving outdoor experiences, promoting visitor safety, and contributing to the local economy.”

Visit White Pine County is proud to partner with IMBA on this trail work, as well as on a county-wide trail signage project funded by the state.
