Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health (CCLRCBH) and the Center for Neurological Restoration (CNR) welcomes Zoltan Mari, MD as the Center’s new Section Head of the Nevada Movement Disorders Program and the Lee Pascal Parkinson’s Disease Scholar. Mari joins CCLRCBH after more than 10 years at Johns Hopkins University, where he most recently served as the Chief Director of the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders. An expert in Parkinson’s disease (PD), Mari holds an extensive background in research and utilizes a dynamic approach to treatment, specializing in deep brain stimulation, clinical neurophysiology and more. Dr. Mari’s recruitment represents another step in the progress of Cleveland Clinic and the CCLRCBH providing excellent neurological care in Southern Nevada.
“In his time at Johns Hopkins University, Zoltan has proven his distinguished leadership abilities by spearheading the growth and development of their movement disorders center,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, director of CCLRCBH. “His dedication to advancing medical research and recognition for providing outstanding patient care makes him a perfect fit within our team.”
Mari attended the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University in Hungary before further medical training at the State University of New York and National Institute of Health. During his neurology residency, he became a staff member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In his decade at Johns Hopkins University, Mari played an integral role in building the movement disorders program from the ground up, serving as director for multiple initiatives including the Dystonia Center, National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence and more.
“We look forward to continuing the success of our Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders Program with Dr. Mari’s expertise and guidance,” said. Dr. Hubert Fernandez, Director of the Center for Neurological Restoration at Cleveland Clinic. “Our program will benefit greatly with Dr. Mari and we are excited to further more expand the research arm that patients will directly benefit from one day.”
A leading mind and innovator in the field of deep brain stimulation, Mari established Johns Hopkins’ Deep Brain Stimulation Center and developed multi-disciplinary programs that have helped pave the way for exceptional clinical care. While at Johns Hopkins, he created a movement disorder clinical fellowship program that has since trained eight fellows. Over the course of his career, Mari mentored a multitude of students, earning him several top teaching awards and established numerous nationally prominent continuing medical education programs. In his new role at CCLRCBH and CNR, Mari plans to implement the use of deep brain stimulation and increase community outreach around the treatment.
In addition to overseeing the clinical care and diagnosis of patients with movement disorders, Mari plans to expand the program’s ongoing research and treatment initiatives. Mari hopes to increase remote care outreach to provide enhanced, comprehensive care to those living across Nevada, as well as increase the number of clinical trials for PD. With the information obtained from research trials, Mari will focus on using advanced imaging to learn more about the origins of PD in an effort to develop a disease modifying therapy.
