Lady Rebels Ready For MW Contest At New Mexico On Sunday

LADY REBELS READY FOR MW CONTEST AT NEW MEXICO ON SUNDAY 

UNLV and New Mexico, both 4-0 in MW play, will tip-off on Sun., Jan. 12 at 1:00 p.m. PT/2:00 p.m. MT at The Pit

 

The UNLV Lady Rebels have another undefeated Mountain West match up, this time on the road visiting New Mexico on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. The game will be live on CBS Sports Network. The Lady Rebels and Lobos are the last two undefeated teams in MW play (4-0).

ABOUT NEW MEXICO: UNLV holds the overall series 42-28 against New Mexico. Last season, the two squads split the MW series, 1-1, each having wins on the opponents’ court. Under head coach Lindy La Rocque, the Lady Rebels are 5-3 against the Lobos having a 3-2 record in Las Vegas and 2-1 record in Albuquerque. New Mexico heads into Sunday’s contest with an 11-6 overall record and a 4-0 MW record. The Lobos are coming off a 73-67 victory over Wyoming. New Mexico is led by Destinee Hooks and Viane Cumber who are both averaging double-figures. Hooks averages 17.1 points per game and Cumber is averaging 16.0 per game respectively. Hulda Joaquim leads the Lobos in rebounds, bringing down 7.4 per game. Cumber is second on the squad in rebounds with 6.5 per game.

SQUAD LEADERS: UNLV currently has three players scoring in double-figures and are led by Amarachi Kimpson with 13.8 points per game. Kiara Jackson is the second leading scorer who is averaging 12.3 points per game and leads the Lady Rebels in assists with 4.8 per game and field goals made with 5.3 per game. Alyssa Brown leads the squad in rebounds, bringing down 6.8 per game. Meadow Roland is second for the Lady Rebels in rebounds with 6.3 per game.

NON-CONFERENCE WRAP: The Lady Rebels played the 23rd toughest non-conference schedule in the nation finishing with a solid 8-4 performance. UNLV collected two double-digit wins over Power Conference teams with 19-point wins over both UCF (Big 12) and DePaul (Big East). The Scarlet & Gray played opponents from nine different conferences in their non-conference slate.

LAST TIME ON THE COURT: The UNLV Lady Rebels remain undefeated in Mountain West play after collecting a 70-61 over Colorado State on Wednesday night at Cox Pavilion. The Scarlet & Gray have now won five straight games and their ninth consecutive win over the Rams. Aaliyah Alexander led UNLV with second 20-point game in a Lady Rebel uniform, scoring 21 points by shooting 7-for-13 from the field, 2-for-4 from long range and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Kiara Jackson was the second leading scorer on the squad with 19 points. Amarachi Kimpson and Meadow Roland each had nine points on the night, while Kimpson led the team in assists with five. Four different Lady Rebels had five rebounds each, including Alexander, McKinna Brackens, Alyssa Brown and Meadow Roland.

THREE-PEAT LAST SEASON: The Lady Rebels have continued to bring the heat last season, which culminated with a third consecutive Mountain West Regular Season and Tournament Titles. UNLV became the first program in MW history to claim both titles in three straight seasons. The Scarlet & Gray earned its third automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, a first in both program and league history. The Lady Rebels finished the season only one of two squads to have two (South Carolina) straight seasons with 30 wins. UNLV earned its highest ranking in both the AP and Coaches Poll coming in at No. 20 and No. 19. The Lady Rebels appeared in the Top-25 eight times this season and came into the season receiving votes for the first time in 19 years. UNLV claimed the MW’s Player of the Year in Desi-Rae Young (All-MW Team and All-Defensive Team), and Sixth and Freshman of the Year with Amarachi Kimspon (All-MW Team honorable mention and All-Freshman MW Team). Kiara Jackson earned All-MW team accolades and Alyssa Brown was named MW Tournament MVP.

WHAT UP SQUAD: The Lady Rebels return 10 of the 14 players from its 2024 championship squad, including two starters and Mountain West Sixth Player and Freshman of the Year Amarachi Kimpson. UNLV added two freshmen guards Teagan Colvin and Elli Guiney, and junior transfer Aaliyah Alexander from Eastern Washington.

UP NEXT: The Lady Rebels will be back in Las Vegas for the next two Mountain West games, first hosting Air Force on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. PT at the Cox Pavilion.
