Three Square Food Bank to Provide 884,262 Meals to Valley’s Food-Insecure through Hunger Action Month Efforts

The Southern Nevada community put the “action” in Hunger Action Month this past September, helping to raise nearly $295,000 for Three Square Food Bank. As a result, the nonprofit will provide 884,262 meals to food-insecure Southern Nevadans.

The support allows Three Square to continue its fight against hunger, as food insecurity remains above pre-pandemic levels. Nearly 364,000 valley residents don’t know where their next meal is coming from, including more than 131,000 children.

“We surpassed the total funds raised last year by more than $95,000, nearly tripling the number of meals that will go to those struggling with hunger,” said Three Square President and CEO Brian Burton. “As this community continues to heal from the events of the past 18 months, it is so heartwarming to see how people continue to show up for their neighbors in need.”

From volunteering and donating to hosting virtual food drives, there was no shortage of ways to get involved during Hunger Action Month. The Fill the Plate Community-wide Virtual Food Drive presented by Boyd Gaming Corporation returned this year. The initiative provided community members the opportunity to donate all month long, contributing more than 304,000 meals to the effort. In addition, Three Square teamed up with Hunger Related Events and Audacy’s KMXB-94.1 FM, KXQQ-100.5 FM and KXNT-840 AM on Sept. 16 and 17 to fight hunger across the valley with the entirely virtual “4 Corners Food Drive,” which contributed an additional 210,000 meals.

And once again, longtime supporter Lotus Broadcasting and KOMP-92.3 FM helped close out the month with a radiothon on Sept. 30.

Three Square is one step closer to a hunger-free community thanks to the Southern Nevada community and following additional sponsors: MSTS – Nevada National Security Site, EDP Renewables North America, JP Morgan Chase Bank, Rimini Street, NRG Energy, Inc., Desert Produce Sales, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Desert Produce, InTouch Credit Union and The Siegel Group.

About Three Square Food Bank
Three Square is Southern Nevada’s only food bank and largest hunger relief organization, serving Las Vegas and all of Clark, Lincoln, Esmeralda and Nye counties. Since opening in 2007, Three Square has provided more than 444 million pounds of food to hundreds of thousands of people in need and earned a reputation as one of the most efficient and effective food banks in the country. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Three Square immediately implemented a disaster response plan to answer sudden school and business closures, drastic declines in retail food donations, social distancing limitations on volunteer efforts, reduced on-site staff support, and the need for low-contact food distributions. Within days, Three Square had increased food distribution by 250,000 meals a week and increased the capacity of its Call Center to refer Southern Nevadans to available food resources, social services, and unemployment benefits. A member of the Feeding America network of food banks, Three Square remains committed to its mission of providing wholesome food to hungry people, while passionately pursuing a hunger-free community.
