Senior Mia Trejo earns UNLV’s sixth conference weekly honor of 2021
UNLV softball has garnered the Mountain West Player of the Week award for the fifth time this season as senior Mia Trejo earned the weekly honor, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is the second career award for the Tucson, Arizona, native.
UNLV has collected six weekly honors overall in 2021 with Jenny Bressler named Pitcher of the Week on March 30. That is the most in a decade, matching the six the Rebels had during the 2011 season.
Trejo was key in helping the Rebels earn a crucial series win over first-place Fresno State in Las Vegas last weekend, going 6-for-9 (.667) with a home run, two runs scored, two walks and seven RBI.
With the series opener tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, Trejo smacked a single off the wall in left to score the game-winning run from third for the 6-5 walk-off win, ending a 13-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. Trejo had a monster game at the plate in game two, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a run scored and six RBI in the 9-1 run-rule win in five innings. The first baseman hit a two-run home run in the first inning to put UNLV up 2-1, then delivered a pair of two-run singles in both the fourth and fifth innings, making her responsible for driving in six of UNLV’s nine runs in the series-clinching win.
The victory in the series was huge for the Rebels as they now own the tiebreaker in any scenario where UNLV and Fresno State end up with identical conference records at the end of the regular season, which would give the Rebels the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
UNLV has one Mountain West series remaining, traveling to in-state rival UNR for three games, May 8-9.
